With the exception of the Harry Potter books some years back, I don’t normally highlight more than the opening book in a series. But Amy Timberlake’s Skunk and Badger book, which I’d pegged for ages eight to 88, saw me through months of isolation last year and I’d be remiss if I didn’t urge you to check out Book 2 in the series: Egg Marks the Spot (HarperCollins). Like its predecessor, it’s clever, entertaining, and illustrated by Canadian artist, Jon Klassen.
— Bernie Goedhart, "Books for Kids: Think about giving a kid a book this year." Postmedia News, November 29, 2021

The second volume of adventures featuring odd roommates chaotic cook Skunk and meticulous rock scientist Badger is another mad marvel. When Badger’s Spider Eye Agate is stolen, Skunk takes him camping on an expedition to find a replacement — but what they actually discover is that friendship is worth more than any possession. I love these books.
— Sally Morris, "Let Santa cast a spell on YOUR little ones: Cheeky monkeys, moles and Arthurian legends, SALLY MORRIS picks this year's best children's books," The Daily Mail (12/2/21)

Timberlake creates an irresistible mix of high stakes, laugh-out-loud moments, and truly unexpected plot twists as the friends work together to fend off Cousin Fisher, making for an unforgettable expedition. Klassen’s chapter illustrations … further heighten the story’s charm and humor. All told, it’s a wonderful read.

EGG MARKS THE SPOT is the perfect September read to make you feel cozy and content. ...I adored every minute of it. I didn’t see anything coming, every twist and new saga of the little journey proving to be a complete surprise. ....The writing itself is the reason the vibe of this book is so whimsical and Over-the-Garden-wall-esque...Timberlake’s style is super quirky and odd. Every bit of dialogue is snappy and sharp, and the use of onomatopoeia, italics, capitalization, and other fun textual tricks made the story pop from page and into my brain. It was so satisfying to read, and I fell in love with the characters immediately. What I also didn’t realize when I bought this book (having literally bought it because I gasped at how cute the art was), is that this is the second book in the Badger and Skunk saga. You bet I’ll be grabbing that first one ASAP. Rest assured, you don’t need the first book, to enjoy this one.

Skunk and Badger: Egg Marks the Spot (A&U) by Amy Timberlake and illustrated by Jon Klassen takes the mismatched friends trope to a delightful place with the cantankerous Badger and spritely Skunk.
— Michael Earp, "Fantasy, football and fun: this year’s best books for kids," The Age ( Australia, December 2021)

Once again, readers are in for a delight of a book full of friendship, humor, found family, delicious food, and chickens. An utter joy!
— Cathy, Blue Willow Bookshop (Houston, TX) "Best Books of 2021"

Beautifully written by Amy Timberlake and featuring Jon Klassen’s gorgeous artwork… the adventures of Skunk and Badger has all the best bits of Winnie the Pooh, The Wind in the Willows and The Adventures of Frog and Toad. Two unlikely friends, experiencing the world, overcoming challenges and learning the true value of friendship.
...Egg Marks the Spot is another wonderfully whimsical tale that deserves to be treasured, just like Badger treasures his rocks and Skunk treasures his time on a Sunday morning with the The New Yak Times Book Review. Best enjoyed with a hot mug of Skunk’s fire cocoa.
— Matt W: A Word About Books (November 2021)

Newbery Honoree Amy Timberlake (One Came Home) and Caldecott Medal winner Jon Klassen (This Is Not My Hat) team up again to build on their story of a friendship both tender and outrageously funny. ...While book one (Skunk and Badger) establishes the fragile new bond between the roommates, Egg Marks the Spot deepens the connection. Klassen contributes his trademark droll artwork in both full-color and black-and-white illustrations that invite leisurely perusal. Details like the cast-iron pan hanging from Skunk’s massively overstuffed backpack work to build on and reinforce the hilarity of Timberlake’s text. Book three, we’re waiting for you!

Amy Timberlake has such a fun franchise going with the Skunk and Badger books. This one is clever, smart, and laugh-out-loud funny and exciting at the same time. Her writing is terrific, and the story is compelling. The illustrations by Jon Klassen have just the right sense of fun to them to accompany this terrific story. It’s a good one!
— Rosi Hollinbeck, The Seattle Book Review (August 2021)

The Skunk and Badger books are absolute gems. Not only are the books themselves gorgeously designed, the stories inside are treasures as well. I HIGHLY recommend reading them aloud - the writing just begs to be brought to life! ... [These are] Middle grade chapter books, appropriate for all ages, perfect for fans of The Wind in the Willows and Pax.

Definitely my #1 book of 2021 so far ✨
— Rachel, The Booklover Bookshop (Auckland, New Zealand)

It’s a delightful, sturdy little book for a beginning reader, not intimidating at all. Lovely cover and binding.
— Louise White, Iowa Public Radio "The 2021 Talk of Iowa holiday book guide for kids"

Hilarious and full of unexpected twists and turns, “Egg Marks the Spot” is certain to have kids well absorbed in this delightful tale of quirky personalities and genuine friendship.
— Kendal A. Rautzhan, "Kicking Off the Holiday Gift Suggestions for Kids" The Canton Repository (11/28/21)

The second adventure of Skunk and Badger is full of twists and turns that will leave you wanting more all the way until the very end. ...This book took me back to the days of Frog and Toad, ...Throughout their journey I found myself laughing out loud as the onomatopoeias filled each page... The witty banter and whip-smart characters had me smiling at every turn... This story is filled with honesty and humor that resonates with the trials and tribulations of friendship. It was real and whimsical at every turn. This is a story that will stand the test of time because of the heart that so clearly shines through. Egg Marks the Spot is full with a little friendship, and a lot of love to make you smile and remember the joys of going on an adventure.

What about the Audiobook?

Narrator Michael Boatman is a one-man band of banjo plucks, chicken bocks, and a panoply of other sound effects in this clever and silly sequel to SKUNK AND BADGER. ... Boatman goes all in, delivering Skunk and Badger’s back-and-forth banter and all of Timberlake’s swoops and swirls of language and wordplay with panache and full-throated enthusiasm.”
— J.M.D. Audiofile 2021, Portland, Maine

Leaning heavily on its delightfully whimsical qualities, Book 2 of Timberlake and Klassen’s endearing series also boasts a whole lot of heart, perhaps even more so than its predecessor. Even as its often fantastical premise careens over the edge (and thrillingly so), the series’ titular duo keep it grounded thanks to Timberlake’s clear admiration for these characters and their quirks. Klassen’s artwork, meanwhile, continues to awe with its wistfulness. As wonderful as Important Rock Work.
— Kirkus Review, starred ⭐️ review (July 2021)

Amy Timberlake takes an entertaining detour into “Jurassic Park” territory in her second adventure of Skunk and Badger, the Odd Couple roommates introduced in last year’s amusing and heartwarming debut. ...To forget their troubles, the two friends head off on a rock-finding expedition, only to land in more trouble. ... “Skunk and Badger” are lovely books, beautifully written, often laugh-out-loud funny, a winning combination of science and whimsy, with wondrous, droll, sepia-shaded ink illustrations by Caldecott Medalist Jon Klassen.

Amy writes with energy, verve and control. Each chapter is full of ridiculous elements but somehow it all makes sense and the reader is happy to inhabit this world, in fact, sad when the story comes to an end. Poor Badger has a lot of trouble understanding the chicken dialect. Skunk cooks up marvellous meals (wild garlic fried rice and a dandelion salad with an olive oil, mustard and maple syrup vinaigrette) He says: ‘See all the dandelion greens? We have been sleeping in salad!’...The story is packed with incident, humour and insight into human behaviour, yes, human. All our foibles, our strengths and weaknesses, our fears and loves are there to be found in every creature.

Every page is a delight and I read it in one sitting and then enjoyed it even more the second time. I just hope that Amy and Jon are sitting down now and writing the third adventure.
